Playing with Flowers - Experimental Typography
How can you convey a message utilizing found materials, and manipulating each material into a beautiful composition?
Rupi Kaur's work The Sun and Her Flowers is one of my favorite collections of poetry. I chose to honor her work by recreating the book's cover with found, natural materials.
ADD: I used natural materials that resembled the color of the sun. Using the font Black Mango as inspiration, I wrote out the words "the Sun," and applied dried polenta and tumeric using Elmer's glue, Mod Podge, and a small paintbrush.
SUBTRACT: Next, I gathered some leaves from my backyard and carved out the word "AND," inspired by the typeface Arial Black.
DISTORT: Finally I distorted various plants and flowers from my backyard. Using small map pins to position them into place, I created the letters to spell out the words "her flowers." Due to the size of my available poster board, I linked the letters together later in Photoshop.
